Nice blog on nudging ;)
Although I think your comparison to organ donation is a bit flawed, since that really is about property/ownership and not behavior. That makes it a very different issue and a much more forceful action from the governments side. That said, I agree that we all ought to be organ donators!

While I can't speak for L.L. Bean (yet), I can say that I came across Lands' End using social media to engage consumers whilst working on an internet marketing assignment for school. As L.L. Bean is a competitor I'll be researching also, I'll know more then about whether they are as well.

More companies are getting involved (and are hiring those who are savvy enough to do it) in order to compete in today's sales climate, so it's no surprise if they've jumped on the bandwagon too.

Thanks for your comment. (Sorry only I only saw it now a month later.)

It is an interesting question, once you start buying online, you kind of don't see the point of going back to brick and mortar stores. Stores are typically offer blaring music, crowds, attitude and all at a premium price. Yet, there is a lot that can be said for human interaction (store clerks or other patrons giving helpful fashion advice) or the instant gratification of putting on your new items as soon as you get home.

I enjoyed your comments above. It is a good questions as to whether one should just buy all your designer clothes at sample sales?.
Personally I find it saves a lot of time and hassle buy visiting these sales and getting a real bargain. The only comment I would make is there are a few too many

Hey Michael, thanks for the comment.

I haven't noticed L.L. Bean or Land's End using social media to reach out to younger consumers or "fans" recommending their products on forums. It's not to say that they aren't doing it, but it just hasn't reached my usual sources. Let's also keep in mind that both of these companies primarily sold their products through catalogs, therefore I'm not sure that they are as savvy at using online, mobile, or social advertising methods. It seems to me that stores and services that originated on the internet, such as Gilt Groupe or ShopStyle, are more adept at taking advantage of newer advertising outlets.

Update: Not to say that L.L. Bean and Land's End aren't running online ads targeted at younger consumers, it's just that my recall of their ads is almost nonexistent. My recall for Gilt and ShopStyle ads is higher and more positive, as these two sites run place ads on websites that bring me amusement on a near-daily basis (Last.fm and Gawker).

If L.L. Bean and Lands End are targeting younger demos they might want to "seed" their reviews and/or message boards with younger influencers, especially if it's a potential deterrent for you. Also, I'm curious if you've noticed whether they are leveraging social media and other new media to reach out to these younger consumers?
